What guns do you think are best for home security? There are a variety of guns that are small and compact for home security. Do you have one that you have that you like. A semi automatic pistol may be difficult for some women to use as it may be hard for to retrack the slide.

This is such a great point you bring up. You are right. The action of pulling back the slide on a semi auto pistol can be difficult, which is one reason that many people suggest a magnum for a home protection system. A .38 is generally a very good. Choice.

I have had several friends suggest to me that I should consider getting a semi-automatic pistol, but as I tested the weight and the pull back slide I realized that it was quite a chore to do it and still hold the gun steady. So then I checked out the 38 pistols, and I liked the feel of the handle, it felt natural and comfortable. The weight of the gun is slightly more than I like but I feel with practice on the firing range I will get used to it and become a good shot, thereby hitting the target dead center.

I've frequently heard the shotgun recommended as the ideal home defense weapon, but I have no personal experience to back this up.

This is a great question. I am a woman with hand problems and need to find a gun that would not cause to much kick back. I have a small G26 and is comfortable but hard to grip handle without fingers over lapping to much. As I said I have problems with my hands and so gripping anything small is hard. Fingers are crippled in the way of arthritis. Husband says he will get me a new one that I can hold but I want to search out one that is much better than a store bought one and smooth on the release.

One gun that I've found to have a smooth release is the Smith and Wesson bodyguard 380. I would still try to see if your local shop has one to try out first, but this gun should do the trick. I am sorry for your arthritis problems.

The best answer I can give you IMHO is pick the one that goes "bang" when you pull the trigger. Accuracy is not so much an issue considering that most HD engagements are going to occur at a distance of less than 20 feet. 1/8 inch difference from gun to gun at that distance doesn't mean squat if you are aiming at center mass. As for shottys for an HD weapon, not in my house. You load slugs and miss you are putting big holes in your house and your stuff. Load shot, and if you have pets there is a good chance Fluffy may get some pellets in the butt. Not to mention shot tends to leave holes every where if you miss. My personal choice is my trusty Glock G22 in a .40 S&W. Good stopping power in a reliable platform plus if it is good enough for LEOs it is good enough for me. Just my thoughts.

This reminds me. I need to put up a list of acronyms.

For those unsure, HD means home defense.
