I recently went to an Army Surplus and saw a M4. They told me I needed to clean it first before I tried to shoot it. So what would be the best method and what stuff would I need to buy for doing this? I wouldn't want to cause problems down the road if I used something that could hurt the metal in anyway and cause my aim to not be prefect or what not.

Follow the manufacturer's recommended cleaning guidelines.
