AK-101 1990s Russia 7.62x39mm, 5.45x39mm

In the 1990s, Izhmash designers developed the unified complex of Kalashnikov assault rifles chambered for domestic 7.62 x 39mm, 5.45 x 39mm cartridges as well as the 5.56 x 45mm NATO cartridge to expand the export capabilities of the enterprise.
These assault rifles can be supplied to traditional Russian clients and NATO standard-oriented countries.
The complex comprises assault rifles for general purpose use (AK-74M, AK-101, AK-103) and for auxiliary designation (AK-102, AK-104, AK-105). All of them feature a high degree of unification in the construction of the assemblies and parts as well as the in technology of their manufacture.

Is this rifle legal in America to own privately? If so, under what conditions?

That varies from state to state but generally the answer is yes. It must conform to federal and state regulations for that type of weapon. Where I live means semi auto only.

I have always wanted either an AK 47 or AK 74. You can usually (depending on the state) get a civilian semi-automatic AK.

To own one in the US it first has to be 922r compliant, which means it needs to have 'X' US made parts. For the AK platform X=5 (6 if you have a muzzle break). The parts that you can choose from on the AK platform to make it 922r compliant are:

-Receiver
-Barrel
-Butt stock
-Trigger Group (counts as 3)
-Barrel Trunion
-Magizine (counts as 3)
-Handguard
-Muzzle break
-Bolt carrier group (I think)

Im not a lawyer but im pretty sure thats correct (might be missing one or two).

If you cannot find it already 922r compliant you can purchase it as a "kit" which is a disassembled rifle that usualy has the barrel and/or receiver sawed in half. And when it arrives you just add the US made parts.

And secondly, it has to be compliant with your states gun laws. Im not exactly sure what the gun laws for each state is because I dont live in those states so it doesnt really effect me. But in the average state its completely legal to own an AK variant in its 'full auto' version. You would have to get it from a Class 3 dealer, and from what I hear you will have to pay a premium for a full auto gun, fill out a ton of paperwork, explain why you want a full auto assult rifle, and pay a fat tax stamp.

I would personaly rather have the semi-auto myself.

Full auto is really only for suppressive fire anyway, and thank you for the added information. I actually forgot that there was a requirement on parts being U.S. made.
